Minority in parliament lauds Otumfuo’s ‘Heal Komofo Anokye’ initiative

The Minority in Parliament has commended the overlord of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his “Heal Komfo Anokye” initiative.

The initiative’s primary goal is to raise USD10 million for the much-needed renovation of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

The hospital serves as a critical healthcare institution serving as a referral centre for 12 out of the 16 regions in Ghana.

At a press briefing in Parliament on Tuesday, 14 November 2023, the Minority on the Health Committee, led by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akando, expressed appreciation for Otumfuo’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.

The Minority also used the opportunity to call on the government to reassess its priorities, particularly in critical healthcare projects like the Komfo Anokye maternity block.

The Minority caucus noted: “It is instructive to note that as of now, the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) has no functional imaging equipment. Neither MRIs, CT-scans, or even x-ray machines are working”.

“This deplorable state of our hospitals jeopardises the health and well-being of our citizens but also undermines the credibility of our healthcare system.”

Drawing attention to the challenges confronting healthcare infrastructure, including the abandonment of vital projects, the Minority specifically highlighted the Komfo Anokye maternity block.

The Minority urged Ghanaians to rally behind Otumfuo’s initiative and called on other leaders to emulate his example in addressing the urgent healthcare needs in the country.
